Feeling discomfort when it’s that time of the month? Well, grab some tea and snuggle up in your favorite sheets, because we’re sharing a few positions to make those cramps die down as you lie down.
The fetal position is one of the best ways to help you sleep like a baby. It helps relax the abdomen, keeping any tension away from the middle of your body, and decreases the pain caused by contractions. A little bonus, it also helps warm you up!
Everyone loves hugs, and what better time to receive one than during your period? Now, you don’t actually need someone else to hug you–this is a chance for you to give yourself some tender loving self-care! Simply lie on your side, cross your arms, and wait for those sweet, sweet Zzzs. You can also place a pillow in between your legs for some extra cushy comfort.
We’ve all had those moments when all we want to do is dive face-first into bed and wait for the next day to come. But did you know that lying face down on your bed can help alleviate those cramps, as well? Putting pressure on your abdomen can help lessen the pain while you wait for sleep to come. However, it is not recommended to be repeatedly sleeping this way as it may cause back problems. Instead, try this during nap times, or only on days when you feel like you really need to.
But, as we all know, cramps don’t just happen at night. If you find yourself in this position, look for a spot where you can get rid of the pain before it cramps your style!
Here are some yoga-inspired poses to try during the day.
This popular pose is commonly used to relax the muscles after exercising. Apart from calming you down, it also releases tension from your lower back. To start, all you have to do is:
- Kneel on a mat
- Separate your knees to match the hip line
- Lean forward and position arms back
- Gently place your forehead against the floor or on a cushion
Let those cramps flutter away in just two easy steps:
- Lie on the floor with your arms spread in a straight line
- Bend your legs and bring your feet together
This is called the “prone butterfly position”—it opens up your body and calms you down to help relieve any tensions in your pelvic area.
No, you won’t be preparing to take flight, but you will be getting ready for a simpler way to relax your cramps. The butterfly position targets exactly where the pain is mostly experienced—your groin area.
- Sit on the floor
- Finding the soles of your feet and flex your legs
- Hold onto your ankles
It is important to note that if you have any type of injury to your knees, groin, or any other that can cause you pain while moving, it is best to first seek help from a professional.
And that’s it! These are just some of the many ways you can have a little period of rest on those days. Don’t forget, we all experience menstrual cycles differently, so be a little kind towards yourself during this time of the month and take care!
