Get Fit and Have Fun with Calisthenics

You’ve probably seen posts about it on social media or read about it in online magazines. Even if you haven’t, we’re sure that you’ve heard this word used in conversation or saw someone doing it. Just like CrossFit and HIIT, calisthenics is starting to take the world by storm because of its simplicity and effectiveness.

But is it the right exercise for you? Let’s immerse ourselves in the principles and benefits of this trending workout to see what all the fuss is about and find out why you should give it a try

Wait a Minute! What is it?

To put it simply, it means beauty and strength. Calisthenics takes its name from two ancient Greek words that mean exactly just that. Now that’s an exercise that already promises the rewards in its name!

And here’s the best part: you don't even need any fancy equipment or weights to do it. That's right, your body is the only gym you need. This makes it perfect for those who don't have access to a gym or prefer to work out outdoors in backyards or parks. But don't let the lack of equipment mislead you—calisthenics is all about building strength and improving muscle resistance. It's no wonder that it's become so popular in the Philippines that even the Department of Education has launched a national program promoting daily exercise routines in schools and community learning centers.

Better Body Awareness and Coordination

Always wanted to have full control of your movements? Because calisthenics require full command of your muscles and joints, you are more aware of what your body can do and improve your coordination and mobility. Talk about being in a win-win situation!

Burn, Baby, Burn

Unlike bodybuilding, calisthenics works all your muscles together instead of isolating specific muscle groups, pushing your body to burn more calories. Greatly beneficial if you’re looking to shed some pounds.

It’s All About the Gains

No weights? No problem! Using your bodyweight is just as effective in increasing muscular strength – without the need for extra equipment.

The Anytime, Anywhere Workout

All you need is your body and some open space. Plus, if you're someone who travels a lot, you can train anywhere you are without worrying about finding a gym.

Time to Get Moving

Plank Push-ups

Start from a plank position, with hands and elbows stacked under your shoulders. Make sure you create a straight line from shoulders to heels, with your feet hip-width apart. Tighten your core and bend your elbows slowly, pausing for two seconds before pushing up to the starting position.

Squats

Spread your feet hip-width apart and keep your arms together or straight for added stability. Bend your knees and sit back with your hips. You can go as far down as you can before moving back up. Make sure to stabilize your knees so your hips do all the work.

Dips

For this exercise, you'll need a chair or bench. Rest your hands on the seat with your arms semi-flexed and extend your legs with a slight bend, resting your weight on your heels. Start the downward movement until your elbows form a 90-degree angle, then push up to return to the starting position.

Be sure to consult your doctor before trying out a new workout routine. Once you’re given the green light, you might just find yourself enjoying these exercises and unleashing that strength and beauty you didn’t think you had before!
