Beautiful young woman drinking tea at home

Did you know that acid reflux is among the top three health concerns among Filipino women? But relax! While it may seem alarming, there are several ways to help your body rest easy against acid reflux.

Now you can look at acid reflux as stomach acids going back up to your esophagus, causing a burning sensation in your throat and leaving a bitter taste in your mouth. Or you can think of it as our bodies giving us a little nudge to ease up on the spicy stuff and late-night snacking, and instead focus on embracing healthier eating habits and nurturing ourselves from the inside-out. Personally, we would rather have the latter.

Whichever way you wish to look at acid reflux, here are some teas to help you deal with it.

Payapa with papaya

Used either fresh or dried, papaya leaves promote digestion and help ease chest pains. You may also juice and drink fresh leaves by blending them with some of the fruit to remove the bitterness.

The magic of turmeric

Known locally as luyang dilaw, turmeric has long been a staple in natural medicinal practices across the world, and for good reason. Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties that, aside from soothing acid reflux, may also target a whole list of digestive issues.

Better with ginger

Another crop on the list, ginger’s benefits extend beyond its supposed magic on the singing voice—its roots go way deeper. Salabat or fresh ginger brew not only blocks stomach acid from rising but helps prevent inflammation of the esophagus. You’ll find that a cup or two can hit just the right notes!

The sass of lemongrass

Many Filipinos have seen these zesty strands in their rice, or even their porridge. Lemongrass, or tanglad, packs flavonoids and tannins that neutralize stomach acid and keep gastritis at bay. Oh, and they also pack some tasty flavors when added to your meals!

Smile, there’s chamomile

Apart from helping you get some rest and relaxation, chamomile is also known as a digestive relaxant that reduces gastric activity, soothes stomach pain, and aids digestion.

Yummy and Easy on the Tummy

Need something to chew on while sipping on that tea? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered there, too! Next time you’re getting ready for that grocery run, try adding these types of food to your list. And hey, they help manage acid reflux symptoms as well.

Lemon water and apple cider vinegar

It’s not as counter intuitive as it seems! Lemon and apple cider vinegar can help alkalize the gut and manage your stomach acid.

Alkaline foods

As the name suggests, alkaline foods counteract acidity in the stomach and promote a balanced pH level. Nuts, melons, bananas, and cauliflower are excellent alkaline-rich foods. If you ask us, those ingredients sound good as a salad or two!

Watery foods

If you feel like the acid from your stomach is starting to rise, drown it out with foods rich in water content, such as cucumber, watermelon, lettuce, and celery. And add a glass of water to that, too!

High-fiber foods

Leafy greens, whole grains, and root vegetables effectively douse off acidity in the gut by making you feel fuller for longer, curbing your tendency to potentially eat a little more than you should.

And that’s it! Now you have some refreshing teas and snacks to keep your health up, and your acid down. Just remember that if you think you need more help, it’s always best to consult with your trusted healthcare professional.
